Tornado Damage Photos at Eutaw Online

The Scorching Heat Continues

Today will be the 10th day in a row with triple digit temperatures. There may be a tiny bit of relief around the corner. James Spann says:

"We will slowly back the afternoon high temperature forecasts down in coming days. Slowly is the important word; you sure won’t be needing any jackets or sweaters anytime soon. Dewpoints will also be rising, meaning the air won’t heat as effectively, but on the other hand it means higher humidity and heat index levels."

If You Need Help Contacting People.....

Communications with anyone in New Orleans and the other areas hit by the hurricane are very difficult. Too many people are desperate with worry over someone who stayed through the hurricane and they have not yet heard from them.

The Salvation Army and Ham Radio operators have an online emergency contact request form that you can fill out and submit. Your inquiry will be sent to the disaster area, where SATERN personnel will attempt to locate the person or persons about whom you are inquiring.

Sunday Evening Update

Things have calmed down in Eutaw, it is still windy but not much rain. I have heard reports of trees down on power lines and roads blocked by fallen trees. We'll find out about damages in the morning.

As of 8:30 pm, Alabama Power is reporting 348,414 customers without power in Alabama and they are expecting that number to rise during the night.

We did some planning after the last hurricane and bought a generator. It is very stressful to be totally cutoff from all communications during times like these. Last time I tried using a battery powered radio but the reception was terrible and I couldn't hear anything about the weather situation.

This time I have been able to keep in touch using email and keep up to date via the internet. Since Friday I have keep informed on the situation in New Orleans by going to the Weather Forum at www.wwltv.com. You get a lot more information there and usually before it is reported by the major media.

Electric Power Is Off

We have been loosing power off and on for the past several hours. It went off again and I think this time it is going to stay off because the wind is really picking up now.

We are running the computer off the generator and as long as our DSL stays on we can keep updated on the weather situation.

Checking In

Everything is fine here. We lost power this afternoon but it has been restored. Conditions are rough in Meridian so I am guessing it won't be long before the weather worsens here also. Meridian MS is approximately 60 miles west of our location.

Hurricane Katrina - Here We Go Again

They said we are going to have a heavy hurricane season and I guess they were right! However, I don't think any of us would have expected anything as horrible as the fast approaching hurricane Katrina.

We are getting ready to perform backups and then shut down the main office computers. When that is finished, I will be back here, watching, waiting and posting while the nightmare unfolds.

To all our family, friends and customers who ask us "why do we live here?", well, I am asking myself that same question. I am sooooo tired of this.

Hurricane Rose

When the news reports all say that a hurricane is moving towards your town you hurry and make preparations. That's what I did last weekend. Then suddenly I remembered the vegetables and the rose garden.

It was a hopeless feeling because what can a person do to protect their plants from hurricane force winds? Not much.

We did have high winds that scary night, but not as bad as they predicted. The next morning I was apprehensive to look at the gardens, especially the roses. Most of the rose plants were new, mothers day presents this year.

Imagine how surprised I was to find this rosebud! I call it my hurricane rose.

Sunday Evening Update

We are in for heavy winds tonight. Here in the city of Eutaw our power is still on but I think we will loose it soon. We have a lot to be thankful for, things could have been much worse.

Category 4 - Situation Is Very Dangerous

I have been following the updates throughout the night, hoping this storm will loose strength, but that hasn't happened yet. The winds are now at 145 mph. There is not much time left for last minute preparations.

Sunday night is going to be scary. Don't forget to put the fresh batteries in your flashlight before the power goes out. Charge your cell phones too. Here is a list of emergency phone numbers in case you have misplaced your phone book. Write them down and put them with your cell phone.

Hurricane Dennis Is Now A Category 3

Looks like we are going to be in for a bumpy ride. Dennis continues to grow stronger in the Gulf of Mexico with an expected landfall late Sunday afternoon.

Please don't underestimate the power of this hurricane. According to the National Weather Service we could have wind gusts as high as 70 mph. Please make sure loose items (trashcans, etc) in your yard are secured. As of sunset Saturday evening, there were still a lot of loose items in peoples yards here in Eutaw.

I've noticed a lot more people seem to be taking hurricane preparation more seriously, probably because Ivan is still so fresh on our minds.

However, there are still those who say they have been through this before and don't seem overly concerned. I know people that live in the Mobile area that are staying there during the hurricane. It is my opinion that it can't hurt anything to err on the side of caution.

This is a monster storm. Please, don't take any chances. If not for yourself, do it for your family and friends.

Preparing For Hurricane Dennis

Here we go again. Who would have thought that we would be preparing for another major hurricane so soon after Ivan?

I hear it is bumper to bumper traffic on interstate 65, so many people evacuating and heading north. It was miserable here after Ivan swept through last September. We went days without electric power or phones. It was my hope to stay in a hotel this time but it looks like that will not happen. News reports say that the hotels are all booked.

There is a lot to do and not much time left to do it. I am still hoping that Dennis looses power before hitting the coast.
